TOMATO VARIETIES FOR 2015

Tips on growing and enjoying your tomato plant. See all of our varieties for this year below.

Placement/Planting:

  • You should choose a sunny(6+ hours of sun), well drained garden bed in which to plant your tomato plants.  Work in compost or other organic amendments to the soil before you plant and incorporate a starter fertilizer liked Sure Start to get the little plants off to a good start.
  • A raised bed or containers with a lot of drain holes are two excellent ways to grow tomatoes.
  • You'll need stakes or wire tomato cages to support the plants and keep the fruit off the ground where it might rot
  • Plant your tomato about 2" above the bottom of the stem. Tear off the first two baby branches and plant above those tears. Your plant will develop a deepr root sytem this way.  Only do this for tomato plants.
  • Plant 12-24" apart for determinate varieties, 24-36" apart for indeterminate, unstaked varieties, and 14-20" for staking.
DETERMINATE:(bush) varieties do not need pruning and may be grown with or without support; fruit ripens within a concentrated time period.
INDETERMINATE:(climbing) varieties should be staked, trellised, or caged, and pruned for best results; fruit ripens over an extended period.

Watering/Fertilizer:

  • Healthy tomatoes require excellent drainage.
  • Prevent the bottom of the tomatoes from rotting  by providing a lot of calcium and an even supply of soil moisture.  Gypsum is a great source for calcium and it helps improve drainage as well.
  • Fertilze with EB Stone Tomato food every other week once the fruits start showing.

Watch for pest and disease.  If you notice any bugs or changes in the leaves appearance, come by the nursery for the right product to take care of the problem. Sometimes it might just be a watering issue.
