PLANT OF THE MONTH - JULY 2019
Arbutus 'Marina' - Marina Strawberry Tree
Bring the feel of the Mediterranean to your garden with Marina Strawberry Tree (Arbutus ‘Marina’). This graceful, smaller evergreen tree has a dense crown of deep green, leathery foliage. Branches and trunk display distinctive red bark as older bark peels away to reveal new growth. Soft cascades of bell-like pink flowers appear year-round, with the peak bloom in spring and summer. Flowers are followed by edible strawberry-like fruit which turns a bright red color when ripe. The fruit is very mild in taste but useful for making jams. Marina Strawberry Tree suits a variety of landscape themes and is a good choice for smaller gardens. It does best in full sun, with moist but well-drained soil that is acidic to slightly alkaline. It also grows well in coastal areas.
