Plant of the Month May 2021
Hymenosporum flavum - Sweetshade
Sweetshade is an evergreen tree with a narrow upright growth habit, forming whorls of slender, glossy green leaves at the ends of its branches. It's prized for bright flower clusters that fill the air with a delightful honey-orange blossom fragrance in spring to early summer. Flowers bloom in a pale cream color, then deepen to bright yellow. Sweetshade reaches heights of 20-35 feet and grows about half as wide. Early pruning will strengthen branches. If needed, light pruning after flowering will help maintain your desired size and shape. Its slender form makes it a good choice for smaller yards and streetside planting. Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Although drought tolerant once established, it does best with deep, infrequent watering.
