Hibiscus is one of the most popular plants for adding tropical beauty to the garden. The evergreen shrub blooms showy, trumpet shaped flowers in a wide range of colors. Flowers might be anywhere from 3 to 8 inches in diameter depending on the variety. You’d hardly notice the blooms usually last only one day, as they are produced constantly from summer through fall. Plants grow as high as 15 feet and can be planted in sun or partial shade with a minimum of 2-3 hours of direct sunlight. Partial shade is preferable in hot inland areas. Hibiscus makes a beautiful specimen plant and can be grown in a container to be easily relocated in cooler months where frost is a concern. Bushy growth makes it a good choice for hedges and screens as well. Pruning in winter will encourage a bushier plant and more blooms.
